The purpose here is to create a culture of health, awareness and action within the Black community; to increase the visibility of that culture through solidarity and support; and to debunk stereotypes that Black people are too lazy to get on a bike. The three major reasons why this needs to happen:
1. Health: Black people have the highest prevalence rates for many chronic diseases largely due to unhealthy lifestyles (e.g. lack of exercise)
2. Economics: Black people are among the most economically disadvantaged groups in the United States. Riding bicycles instead of expensive cars could do our pockets some good, especially given the cost of gas.
3. Environment: The environment is such a relevant issue to the Black community. Low-income – many of which are Black- communities bear the brunt of too many environmental injustices (e.g. asthma, exposure to carcinogens).
This is a brief explanation of the mental process that led to wanting to start this group. Besides, how often do you see a group of Black people going on a bike ride? Plus, it would be really nice to establish bike riding as something that our community really can get excited about. You know, set an example. Encourage our people to do the same…for obvious reasons. We ride on Sundays:
El Embarcadero (across from Grand Lake Theater), Oakland

Every Sunday
We’re in the very beginning stages, so while folks are excited we’ve only had a handful turnout to ride. It has been challenging this time of year. I’m advertising the group by word of mouth right now, so that we can grow at a slow steady pace. More stable that way, and the off season is a good time to build a stronger base – see who’s really trying to be a part of this.
Hope to see you on Sunday
After feasting all weekend for “Thanks Giving”… we decided that it would be great to work off some of them slices of pie. Pictures will be uploaded soon. Here was the route: View Larger Map
Not too bad, roughly 6 miles.
Red, Bike and Green is planning to ride on First Friday in Oakland. So if anyone wants to hit up the art gallery scene (bounce around from one venue to the next), socialize with fellow bikers over drinks, or just represent for Black folks on bikes, LET ME KNOW! I’ll be sending out the details for that soon.
